What to look for when joining a tennis club?

So you’ve decided that you want to join a Downe tennis club. However, there are some considerations you should make before you sign up to be a member.

Location

Obviously, convenience is key as you will want to join a tennis club in BR6. However, if you live in a city or large town then you will likely have two or more clubs to consider. In fact, in parts of London we know some areas have 4 clubs in the space of a couple of miles!

Therefore, you might find a tennis club that is a little further away but is better suited to your requirements.

What type of courts does the club have?

By what type of court we mean what surface do they have and what condition are they in. There are various options which we discuss below.

Hardcourts

These type of courts are used at the US and Australian Open tournaments and are actually made out of non-pourous cushioned acrylic (or American cement). It’s a lovely surface to play on, it’s fairly quick with a true bounce and it’s ideal for coaching.

One downside however is that they are unplayable when it rains and the rainwater will need clearing.

Facilities

Tennis clubs can come in many shapes and sizes and the facilities that they offer can vary wildly. Most tennis clubs will have a club house that comes with changing rooms, showers, bar, seating and view area and a kitchen.

Some tennis clubs are located within a bigger sports facility. For example, David Lloyd clubs often have a tennis club as part of the package that they offer.

It’s obviously nicer to have better facilities but these will often cost more to become a member.

Coaching at a Tennis Club

Often potential new members will be looking to get tennis lessons or coaching at a new club. There is usually one or more LTA coaches who will be attached to the club. They should be able to offer private lessons and some offer courses and even drills sessions to help improve your game.

Group lessons are a great way to make new friends and find fellow players at a similar level.

There should be a junior tennis coaching option too. Often coaches will offer holiday camps and courses for juniors during the week and weekends.
